Medical icon Michael Lersten, MD

Dr. Michael Lersten is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, specializing in interventional spine, sports medicine and pain management.  He has a special interest in regenerative medicine with the use of orthobiologics, which is the use of biological substances to facilitate the healing process of orthopedic injuries. Dr. Lersten takes a holistic approach to patient care, focused on diagnosing the root cause of a condition in order to improve symptoms and overall long-term well-being.

After completing his undergraduate education at the University of Iowa, Dr. Lersten attended the University’s Carver College of Medicine.  From there he completed his residency in PM&R at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  He went on to complete his first fellowship in Interventional Spine at the Stanford University School of Medicine, followed by an additional 4-month fellowship focusing on the use of ultrasound and orthobiologics at the esteemed Bodor Clinic in Napa Valley, California.

As an athlete himself, Dr. Lersten is passionate about helping patients achieve a better quality of life through fitness and non-surgical pain management.  He believes the use of orthobiologics is an exciting new frontier in medicine that is rapidly evolving to provide patients with more minimally invasive treatment options to bring them relief and comfort.  Part of Dr. Lersten’s practice includes includes ultrasound guided injections.

Dr. Lersten has provided medical support for many athletes of various skill levels throughout his training, from weekend-warriors and high school athletes up to the professional level.  He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spine Intervention Society, and the North American Spine Society.

When not caring for patients Dr. Lersten enjoys powerlifting, reading a good book, building his record collection, trying new wines with his wife, and attempting to break 90 on the golf course
